Asisat Oshoala is in the running for an historic sixth African Womens Footballer of the Year.

The Barcelona Femeni star top the list of 30 players shortlisted for the award by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

CAF announced the list of the nominees on their official X handle on Tuesday.

Oshoala won the award last year, for a record fifth time. She is the only African female footballer to have achieve the feat.

The 29-year-old previously won the prestigious award in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022.

Oshoala won the UEFA Womens Champions League crown with Barcelona last season for a second time.

The striker also had a decent outing for Nigeria at the 2023 FIFA Womens World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

She scored once in four appearances for Nigeria at the tournament.

Her compatriots; Rasheedat Ajibade, Chiamaka Nnadozie and Osinachi are also in contention for the individual accolade.

Christy Ucheibe, Toni Payne and Uchenna are the other Super Falcons players nominated.

It would be recalled that CAF released the different categories for the Mens Award two weeks ago.

Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen is up for the Mens Player of the Year, while Gift Orban is in contention for the Young Player of the Year.

The 2023 CAF Awards Gala will be held in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday, November 11, 2023.
