Oscar Pistorius Released On Parole From South African Prison

11 years after the shocking killing of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, double-amputee Paralympic and Olympic sprinter, Oscar Pistorius appears to heave a sigh of relief after he was released on parole from prison.

Recall that Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through a locked bathroom door in his home in Pretoria on February 14, 2013.

He has maintained that he did not kill her in a fit of anger during a Valentines Day argument, as prosecutors argued, and said instead he had mistaken her for an intruder.

According to reports from CNN on Friday, Pistorius was granted parole in November after serving half of his 13-year sentence for the shooting, which made him eligible under South African law.

Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesperson for South Africas Department of Correctional Services, confirmed Pistorius release from Atteridgeville Correctional Centre, and stated that he will be subject to parole conditions until 2029.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is able to confirm that Oscar Pistorius is a parolee, effectively from 5 January 2024. He was admitted into the system of Community Corrections and is now at home, the DCS said in a statement.

Pistorius will be subject to general parole conditions, including specific hours to be at home, prohibition from consuming alcohol or prohibited substances, and participation in programs identified by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board. Additionally, he is restricted from conducting media interviews, like other parolees.
